Astronomers spot 139 new ‘minor planets’ in our own solar system

by Mike Wehner, BGR

A massive treasure trove of newly-discovered solar system objects was just revealed by astronomers in a new research paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. The team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania made their discoveries using observations from the Dark Energy Survey, or DES, a six-year project that led to the detection of over 300 objects lurking beyond Neptune.

Very Large Telescope observes exoplanet where it rains iron

by ESO, Phys.org

Researchers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) have observed an extreme planet where they suspect it rains iron. The ultra-hot giant exoplanet has a day side where temperatures climb above 2400 degrees Celsius, high enough to vaporise metals. Strong winds carry iron vapour to the cooler night side where it condenses into iron droplets.

“One could say that this planet gets rainy in the evening, except it rains iron,” says David Ehrenreich, a professor at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He led a study, published today in the journal Nature, of this exotic exoplanet. Known as WASP-76b, it is located some 640 light-years away in the constellation of Pisces.

NASA to build telescope for detecting asteroids that threaten Earth

by Paul Voosen, ScienceMag.org

NASA is moving forward with plans to launch an infrared telescope that could detect asteroids on a collision course with Earth. Its launch could come by the middle of the next decade, Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for science in Washington, D.C., said today at a meeting of an agency advisory panel.

Alien Life To Be Discovered In 2021? James Webb Telescope ‘Will Change World Forever’

by Physics-Astronomy.com

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is planned to be launched in  2021 and astronomers consider that this telescope is their best hope of finding life beyond Earth. The JWST is the successor to the Hubble Telescope and is way much more powerful.
