Website Design

Website DesignI have been creating websites for individuals and businesses since the early days of the internet when we still used dial-up modems.

In those early days, websites were written in HTML (HyperText Markup Language is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser), and although HTML components are still used, I develop most websites now using WordPress.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system, referred to inside WordPress as Themes. WordPress is most associated with blogging (its original purpose when first created) but has evolved to support other types of web content including websites, mailing lists and forums, media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems (LMS) and online stores. WordPress is used by more than 60 million websites, including 33.6% of the top 10 million websites as of April 2019, WordPress is one of the most popular content management system (CMS) solutions in use.

Most websites can be developed very quickly and online within a couple of weeks as long as the proper attention is given to the planning stage. Two primary areas of focus during planning and development should be Search Engine Optimization and Mobile Device Compatibility.

Simply defined, Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) means putting all the right pieces into your website to ensure that search engines, like Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc. not only find your website URL, but also find important keywords, META tags, site maps, Terms of Use, Privacy Policies, and other important pieces that will make your website stand out from the competition and get higher search result placement.  The closer to the top of the search list your are, the more likely people are to find you.

Mobile Device Compatibility has become increasingly more important because of the huge number of people who access the internet from their mobile devices.  You will want your website to work regardless of the type of device people are using to access it.
