Wiping fungi on your face? Your makeup bag is a cesspool of germs, study says

Your makeup bag may be crawling with bacteria and fungi.

A report by researchers at Aston University in the United Kingdom, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Applied Microbiology, found that an overwhelming majority of cosmetics are contaminated with E. coli, staphylococcus and other risky germs.

Cosmetics become prime breeding ground for contamination, researchers explained, because of inadequate cleaning and being kept past their shelf life – and because they tend to be applied in the bathroom.

The Food and Drug Administration notes that routine use of a beauty product typically adds microorganisms. This is especially true of eye makeup such as mascara, which is exposed to bacteria and fungi with each use, and face makeup such as concealer and foundation, which tends to be applied manually or with brushes and sponges.
