Sleep problems in older adults linked to cognitive decline and dementia

People who have trouble falling asleep may be at increased risk of developing cognitive problems or dementia than their counterparts who sleep well, a research review suggests.

Researchers examined data on 51 previously published studies that followed middle-aged and older people in North America, Europe and East Asia for at least several years to see if sleep issues were associated with cognitive health over time.

We Just Got More Evidence Our Leading Hypothesis About Alzheimer’s Could Be Wrong

The leading hypothesis on the cause of Alzheimer’s is looking shaky, following a new study that tracked the disease’s early progress in hundreds of volunteers.

For more than 30 years, amyloid plaques have been primary suspects in the cause of dementia. While the potentially toxic accumulations of protein still seem to be related, this research is part of a growing body of evidence that suggest they’re actually latecomers to the disease rather than an early trigger.

The Ability To Read and Write Could Help Protect the Brain From Dementia, Study Suggests

People who cannot read or write may be three times as likely to eventually develop dementia, according to a study published in the journal Neurology on Wednesday.

Dementia is an umbrella term that refers to conditions broadly defined as “a decline in memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking skills that affect a person’s ability to perform everyday activities,” according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It is ultimately caused when cells in the brain are damaged or die such that they cannot effectively communicate with each other.
